An ancient and unique habitat

Dehesas (Spain) and montados (Portugal) are mixed farming systems, combining oak woodlands with livestock grazing and cereal cultivation, often interspersed by areas of scrub – heather, gorse, brooms, lavender, rock rose, strawberry trees etc.

Unlike other agro-forestry systems, it developed around the existing, primeval woodlands. Cork is the most economically valuable product. Spain and Portugal have more than half of the world’s cork oak woodlands, and produce around three quarters of the worlds cork. Natural wine corks represent about 90% of the economic value of the cork market.

The outer bark of a cork oak tree can be stripped every 9-14 years without harming the tree. Since the harvesting involves no logging, a diverse, ancient woodland ecosystem based on native flora has developed.

The oak trees and associated shrubs bind the soil, prevent erosion, and maintain the water table by protecting the soil from evaporation. The wildlife these forests support is unique, and includes the endangered Iberian lynx, the Spanish imperial eagle (with a world population of around 130 breeding pairs) and the Bonelli’s eagle.

What is at stake?

Removal of the native oak forests would destroy a habitat unique in the world. Its destruction would be comparable to turning Yellowstone National Park into a wheatfield.

Species such as the Spanish imperial eagle and the Iberian lynx would probably become extinct. Soil erosion, water evaporation and carbon dioxide emissions would increase.

Montados and dehesas and their important wildlife are also under pressure from powerful agribusinesses, building and real estate interests for tourism, and building of new dams, irrigation networks and highways. Falling cork prices would make it more difficult to resist these threats.

In Spain and Portugal the cork industry provides around 80,000 jobs – many local communities are virtually dependent on cork. As the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) puts it: ‘If the market demand for cork back coasters were to decrease significantly, the entire system could collapse’.

Current Royal Mail requirements are that “According to our Prohibited/Restricted list we do not accept magnetised items with a magnetic field strength of 0.159A/m or more at a distance of 2.1m from the outside of the package.”

The article is not restricted magnetized material, the maximum field strength at a distance of 2.1m (7ft) is less than 0.159A/m (0.002gauss) or there is no significant compass deflection (less than 0.5 degree).

Foamulux is used for our screen printed clocks and boards.

It could make an ideal coaster.

High quality foam PVC produced in the UK. A uniform, expanded closed cell structure gives Foamalux an ideal combination of strength and durability, resulting in excellent resistance to knocks and scratches. Foamalux comes in a wide range of popular, vibrant colours as well as a bright white.

Foamalux also carries an environmental grade – Foamalux Xtra. Foamulux Xtra is a closed cell composite foam PVC sheet consisting of a core of recycled material with co-extruded, double-sided smooth surfaces of white Foamulux. The recycled core is in excess of 80% of the finished sheet, offereing real environmental benefits, as well as ensuring a cost effective product. Our cork producer has published a report showing a comparison of the environmental impacts and energy used to produce aluminium, plastic and cork materials and the carbon emissions involved.Cork oak forests and the natural cork products derived from them are a major carbon sink and have an important role in sustainable development. The crucial role of cork in carbon dioxide retention, preserving biodiversity and combating desertification was highlighted in the report on sustainability, published recently by the company.In comparison, the mining and extraction of non-renewable resources such as petrochemicals and bauxite (used to produce aluminium) have very significant potentially negative impacts on ecosystems. Indeed, the report says, the primary production of a ton of aluminium emits on average 12 tons of CO² and the industrial process of transforming aluminium into a final product (e.g. screwcap) gives rise to further CO² emissions. Further high energy consumption is also required if the plastics and aluminium end products are eventually recycled.Cork on the other hand is a renewable and non-polluting resource produced every 9 years without damaging the cork tree. It is 100% recyclable and requires very low energy consumption since a significant part of the energy needs for production is satisfied using biomass. 

The gloss laminate is free of phtalates and its compounds. All film products are in compliance with the EU Directive 71-3 which mentions the limits of the amounts of the substances listed below which could migrate to the surface of our film especially for applications in children’s toys.

To the best of our knowledge our film does not contain the elements Antimony, Arsenic, Barium, Cadmium, Chromium VI, Lead, Mercury and Selenium nor their compounds. There is no Bisphenol A (BPA) intentionally added or used as an additive or raw material in the manufacture of GBC OPP Gloss or OPP Matt films.

This regulation consolidates all existing legislation on chemicals in the EU and places additional obligations on manufacturers, distributors and on end users of chemicals and products.

The regulation requires a greater exchange of information up and down supply chains, in order for all parties involved to fulfil their legal obligations

Some information re our PVC…

The plasticiser used in our PVC film is DEHP (di-ethyl-hexyl- phthalate) commonly known as DOP (di-octyl-phthalate), in normal use DEHP has no harmful effects.
The European Committee has declared DEHP to be non carcinogenic & non irritant.

The sheet is lead free & cadmium free.

The majority of the opaque films contain organic pigments.
The sheet conforms to the European Toy norm EN71/33, European Packaging regulation 94/62EC & Environmental Protection 1998 no 1165 (UK)

Recycling – Our film can be recycled dependant on the type of sheeting and the amount of contamination.
